Melbourne Autos was formed in 1970 and is now a family run business. In that time we have seen many changes in and around the motor industry. As time has past environmental concerns have become a major part of our business, we now recycling and dispose of vehicles to the highest environmental standard. A Whirlwind XP345 now on loan to Aero Venture in Doncaster and a Dragonfly that is now at Elvington Air Museum, which they now own. Melbourne Autos is situated on an ex prisoner of war camp.
During the Second World War Italian and German prisoners were held here. Towards the end of the war it served as a rehabilitation centre for American and British troops. During the war integration into the local community began with Italian and German soldiers working on near by farms and land, while the site held around 1000 prisoners. We are always looking for more information about the history of the POW camp we a situated on.
